She looked up to the calm, blue sky despite feeling like her heart had tumbled down into the weeds. Weeds that had her tangled and misguided. An awful case of the “malaises” had settled in her bones. Not sure of herself, the future or how many more months, years, days, minutes she could live like this, she felt hollow. Fear kept her frozen. A frozen could be, should be hero managed to look up despite her malaises.
Her upward gaze noticed a large bird gliding above reveling in the sun. “That must be a hawk,” she murmured to herself. She looked around wondering if anyone else noticed the beauty. She was the only human but also noticed a deer at the edge of some woods. Nothing special looking about these woods, some loblolly pines that held quiet and uncertain darkness. The deer lifted its head from the grass it was chewing and silently leapt into the darkness.
The deer was replaced by a large shadow of the hawk sauntering above now lower, demanding admiration. If the hawk was indeed vying for the woman’s attention, it was successful. She admired the bird’s feathers of gold, red, brown, and rust. Suddenly, the hawk swooped towards a pine at the edge of the woods. Then it perched and focused its intense gaze straight into the woman’s eyes.
Stumbling backwards, still stuck in the weeds, she felt the gaze jolt her body while feeling a burst of euphoria rush over her. Without considering her countless fears she managed to pull a foot out of the weeds. She took a step towards the bird and stopped, shocked by the bold move, but it felt right and light, intriguing and clear.
Sunshine tingled her skin. The hawk’s razor gaze softened. As she pulled her other foot out of the weeds a thorn pierced her left achilles tendon. Fear can grow teeth as a manic effort to tighten its grip on a lost heart.
But the thorn prick made her run away from the weeds, towards the hawk who swooped in between the tops of the pines. She didn’t think; she ran for the wood's edge. The hawk was perched on a high branch about thirty yards ahead looking down upon her. The runner squeezed her eyes shut as she entered the woods. When she opened them, she didn’t see darkness like how it appeared from a distance. Instead she saw light, flowers, and smiling people enjoying each other’s company. Amazing!
