Blended & Calm

On a sunny afternoon in a blue collar neighborhood in Western Pennsylvania, my Grandparents and I had settled into their living room to try out a guided meditation tape.  My Grandfather had recently had a heart scare and his cardiologist instructed him to reduce stress and suggested that he start meditating.  Despite his difficulties, he was the kindest, most loving person that I’ve ever known -- our family’s anchor, so I always happily followed along with whatever he suggested.

There we were, quietly meditating together.  I was imagining sitting under a tree when, suddenly, my Grandmother lit her lighter to smoke a cigarette.  That was that for a calm meditation experience.  They began arguing, shocking me out of my reverie.  Disappointed and disoriented, I didn’t really understand their fight: do kids ever understand why adults argue?  I avoided the angry explosion by relying on my best disappearing trick -- I bolted outside where I would hide in bushes or climb a tree.  I’d blend into nature, lost in my imagination, and embrace a calmer world of trees, birds, dirt, and sunshine.  Unlike me, my Grandfather couldn’t blend into nature for hours on end.  Four years later, he had a massive heart attack and died instantly.  His death was the saddest shock of my life.

Thirty-one years later, I still feel him supporting me; I feel confident that he’s finally calm, relaxed, and blended.  I feel a warm, benevolent grandfatherly energy when I am around my teacher, qi gong master, Ou Wen Wei as well.  Everything clicks; everything makes sense.  I feel safe and understood.  I haven’t felt that way since my grandfather passed.  Blended, balanced, and in harmony, Master Ou and his Pangu Mystical Qi Gong help me face instead of hide from life.  Occasionally, I even feel invincible.
The “trick” is maintaining harmony around everyone and everything.  In the midst of rage, neediness, fear, greed, deception, and disease can we be unaffected?  Can we transcend it all?  In The Path of Life V III Chapter 14 page 82 Pangu explains to Master Ou, “... no matter how tragic and convoluted human history is, it always develops towards the true, the good, and the beautiful ...”  I feel that our very survival depends on wholeheartedly believing that we are indeed slowly marching towards a loving, happier existence on individual, familial, and even global levels.  The process is just so heartbreaking!  Can we believe that what seems to be an unattainable trick is actually very tangible and possible?
Speaking of tricks, I’m fascinated by the ultimate tricksters, coyotes, and their abominable spirits.  For centuries, humans have tried to eradicate them because of fear and the need to protect their livestock.  Guess what?  In the United States, coyote populations are on the rise and have been for decades.  Undeterred, they have creatively mastered living among messy, greedy humans.  They blend into nature, living in packs, wisely and quietly hunting together.  They simply hide during the day.  Perhaps, what we consider to be a trick is merely confident and sly wisdom?
Master Ou lectures repeatedly that in order to master our lives, we must have broad, confident, and kind hearts.  My great hope is that all the kind hearts blend together; I believe that it’s already happening.  May we bring coyote wisdom into broad daylight.  In unified, determined strength and confident wisdom, may we embody love.  May we no longer succumb to stress, pain, or greed.  May loving kindness be the end, the beginning ... our eternity.
